The description of the Siamese cat breed also suggests an abbreviated name – Siamese or Siamese, depending on gender. Previously, this was the name of the inhabitants of the ancient state of Siam – modern Thailand, recognized as the country of origin of animals.

Males and females differ little from each other. With their size, they weigh from 3 to 5 kg. The largest individuals can weigh up to 8 kg. The height at the withers is 23-25 cm, and the length of the body reaches 60 cm.

For a long time, Siamese cats have been confused with Thai cats. Both species have distinctive color-point colors and blue eyes that confuse ordinary people. A key characteristic of the Siamese cat is its slender and graceful proportions, giving the breed a slightly alien look.

Key facts about the Siamese cat

The talkativeness of Siamese cats is perceived in two ways. Some owners are delighted with this habit, while others are annoying.

For a long time, these animals were available only to high-ranking individuals. According to legends, cats guarded the jewels of Thai princesses and watched over the property of the temples. It is believed that due to the constant wearing of rings on the tail and close surveillance of the valuable vases, the animals have earned kinks and squint. Modern breeders are trying to eliminate these features.

The life span of a Siamese cat can reach a record 20 years, of course, with proper care.

The history of the origin of the Siamese cat

It is impossible to trace the exact date of the appearance of the breed. Ancient writings were transferred to materials obtained in nature: papyrus, tree bark, palm leaves. Due to their fragility, only a few have survived. For example, the famous “Treatise on Cats” (Tamra Maew) was protected only thanks to copies of more “tenacious” materials. The time of writing the treatise is unknown. Scientists are inclined to the period of the existence of the Thai state of Ayutthaya, that is, to the years 1351-1767.

The history of the origin of the Siamese cat

There are 23 cats illustrated on the pages of Tamra Maew. Six of them bring misfortune to people, and 17 attract good luck. Among the breeds responsible for the happiness and well-being of their owners is the Wichienmaat. This cat has graceful proportions, a white coat, a dark mask on the face, black ears, paws, and tail – the main differences of the modern Siamese cat.

The country of origin of the breed is Thailand, which was called Siam until 1939. Graceful cats that bring good luck were out of the reach of ordinary citizens. These beauties were kept only by royals and monks. The export of Siamese cats was strictly prohibited, so they got outside the country only by the end of the 19th century.

The first breeder of the Asian breed was the Englishwoman Dorothy Neville. She showed her pet in 1872 in London. The reaction was twofold. One part of the jury took the tailed contestant with hostility, the other insisted on further breeding.

Active work with the breed began in 1884 when the British ambassador Owen Gold captured a pair of aboriginal cats from Thailand. The Siamese cat was named Fo, and the cat was named Mia. A year later, their kittens won an international show. In 1892, the first standard was established.

What does a Siamese cat look like?

In the course of breeding work in different countries, deviations in standards appeared. The pointed proportions have been replaced by more rounded ones. Some organizations adhere to a strict division between Siamese and Thai breeds, while others mistake them for one type of Siamese cat.

If you adhere to the original standard for how a Siamese cat looks, then pedigree representatives should correspond to the oriental type. This means the absence of smooth lines and roundness in favor of the predominance of elongated lines and a slender but muscular body.

What does a Siamese cat look like?

Muzzle

The description of the breed includes a wedge-shaped head tapering from ears to nose. The triangular shape is characteristic not only of the head but also of the ears, which are pointed at the tips. For slanting almond-shaped eyes, only blue is allowed.

In the photo of a Siamese cat, the features of the structure of the skull are clearly visible, which does not allow it to be confused with the Thai breed.

Body type

The headrests on a long and graceful neck. The flexible and muscular torso resembles a pipe. The hind and forelimbs are thin and long. Small feet are oval in shape. The length of the hind limbs is longer than that of the front. The tail is as long and thin as the rest of the body and tapers at the tip.

Wool and color

Siamese is smooth-haired cats. They have no undercoat, so the whole body is covered with thin guard hair. The main color of the breed is the color-point. The pinpoint appearance of dark markings on an almost white coat is due to acromelanism. This type of pigmentation is temperature-dependent. The lower it is, the darker the pigment developed. Acromelanism is a form of albinism, which is why all Siamese kittens are born completely white. The dark pigment does not appear until 6-10 months.

According to the CFA standard, four colors of the Siamese are allowed:

  1. Chocolate point. Most of the body is ivory-colored, and the points are milk-chocolate-colored. The pads and nose should be brownish pink.
  2. Purple point. Pink-brown spots are located on the white body. The color of the pads and nose is lavender-pink.
  3. Seal point. Points, paw pads, and nose are colored brown. Most of the hull ranges in color from cream to pale yellow.
  4. Bluepoint. Gray-blue spots are located on a bluish-white body. The nose and paw pads are slate gray.

Other colors are considered unacceptable by the standards.

Siamese cat personality

Siamese is capricious and demanding. Many reviews have been written about the vindictive nature of Siamese cats, but not all breeders agree with them. A properly raised animal will never show aggression, but the offense is easy. Siamese cats have a good memory. They easily capture human emotions, so they distinguish between joy and anger. If you fall for a pet without a proper reason, then he will definitely remember it. Revenge will not take place immediately, but after a while, when the owner forgets about his mistake. Despite this feature, you should not be afraid of these animals.

Siamese cat personality

Domestic Siamese quickly becomes attached to their masters. If you are willing to take the time to raise your pet and do not mind daily conversations, then the pros of the breed will outweigh the possible cons. In the arsenal of Siamese cats, there are intonations for all occasions. With patience, you will soon learn to understand them and recognize the pet’s desires. These cats do not tolerate loneliness, so it will not be possible to retire. They love to sit on their hands, so get ready to watch movies and work on the computer together.

Despite their friendliness and sociability, the Siamese do not get along well with children. If a baby appears in the house, then the cat will be jealous of him and can injure the child with its claws. Too curious preschool children will also experience the cat’s anger. Siamese women hate rough treatment and instantly punish the offender. If you are sure that the child understands how to communicate with pets, then there will be no problems. When handled carefully, cats are happy to support children’s games.

If you got a Siamese and are worried that she is not enough communication – get another one. Making friends with representatives of one breed is easier than forging relationships with other animals. Peace between a Siamese cat and a dog is possible but as an exception to the rule. This usually happens if the animals grew up together or the cat was in the house after the dog.

Siamese cat habits

Despite the intolerant attitude towards loneliness, Siamese calmly endures the absence of the owner, who has gone to work. The main thing is that there is a pattern in this, and after the return, games and conversations follow.

Siamese cats are wary of strangers. If you are going on vacation, then leave your pet with a familiar person. At the time of departure, it is better to leave the cat at home, since changing the usual place will hit the psyche even more.

Raising a Siamese cat

A kitten must be brought up from the first days of its appearance in the house. If you do not want to puzzle over how to wean him from scratching or relieve himself in the wrong place, then immediately stop all forbidden actions. Use the standard ban commands: “fu” and “no”. The first is used for a permanent ban, the second is for a temporary one. For example, “fu” can be used to stop walking around the dining table, and “not” can be used to prohibit scratching after sterilization.

Raising a Siamese cat

Education should be based on affection and respect. Vindictive and aggressive animals are the result of abuse. The main instrument of influence is intonation. It is well caught not only by adult animals but also by kittens.

Siamese is clean and easy to toilet train. During training, be persistent. Do not give up ahead of time, otherwise, the pet will understand this and will create the appearance of misunderstanding with your commands.

Siamese cat health

The breed belongs to long-livers. The maximum life span of these animals is 20 years. However, the health of the Siamese cat can be precarious if its diet is not monitored.

Siamese cat health

For the health of your pet, do not forget about treatment against parasites and vaccinations. Deworming is carried out on a quarterly basis, and vaccination is carried out annually. There is a separate vaccination schedule for kittens. From 2-3 months to 1 year, vaccinations are given gradually with mandatory revaccination. After 1 year, animals are injected only with multivalent vaccines containing several viruses at the same time. They give immunity against the most common viral diseases.

Possible diseases

It is impossible to save your pet from all diseases, so do not forget about preventive examinations at the veterinarian. Among the representatives of the Siamese breed, the following diseases are common:

  1. Bronchial asthma. If your cat is worried about frequent and prolonged coughing fits, get tested. Asthma is often caused by allergens: tobacco, household chemicals, house dust. If you let the situation take its course, the cough can develop into choking or respiratory failure. The pet may die. Determining the exact cause of asthma is nearly impossible. In the absence of pathological changes on the X-ray, the doctor prescribes antihistamine tablets. If the symptoms disappear, the diagnosis is confirmed. For frequent attacks, veterinarians recommend purchasing a cat inhaler.
  2. Amyloidosis. When protein metabolism is impaired, an excessive amount of abnormal proteins builds up in the liver, kidneys, or pancreas. They start an autoimmune process – the rejection of their own cells with the subsequent destruction of the affected organs. There is no cure for the disease, but it can be slowed down with early diagnosis.
  3. Pathology of the cardiovascular system. This group includes aortic stenosis, accompanied by a decrease in blood supply to the heart. Animals with this disease are discarded from breeding. Treatment depends on the severity of the pathology. If the quality of life is not threatened, then it is enough to protect the pet from intense physical exertion.

Obesity and joint diseases are often bypassed by the Siamese, but this does not mean that the cat can be overfed.

Siamese cat diseases

Reproductive health

The first heat in Siamese occurs at 5-9 months, but mating is allowed not earlier than the third heat. With earlier fertilization, the kitten is not able to bear healthy kittens. Pregnancy lasts 55 to 65 days. Vitamins prescribed by a veterinarian must be added to the diet of a pregnant pet. They contribute to the correct formation of embryos and the strengthening of the mother’s immune system.

Siamese cats give birth to 4 to 8 kittens, and some record-holders bring offspring of 13 babies. Primiparous females often suffer from a lack of milk. The problem is solved by injections of medications, but they can be done only after being examined by a veterinarian. Self-calculated dosages can harm the animal.

If you are not ready to give birth, neuter the animals. Neutering and neutering are recommended for all non-breeding cats. The optimal age for surgery is 6-8 months. Younger age is fraught with obesity and pathologies of the genitourinary system. Older pets are more difficult to tolerate anesthesia, so the operation is performed only as a last resort.

Features of feeding and diet

Veterinarians recommend including dry food in the diet of Siamese cats. Unlike natural foods, pellets help remove plaque and prevent the development of tartar. The breed often suffers from gingivitis and periodontal disease, so additional oral care will not be superfluous.

Features of feeding a Siamese cat

Among industrial feeds, there are lines designed specifically for Siamese. On the packaging, you can find a table with a feeding guide for a kitten or adult. All norms are calculated based on the weight and age of the cat. Additionally, a feeding cheat sheet is indicated, where dry food is combined with wet food (canned food or pouches).

Dry food is divided by age and breed. Separately, medicinal feeds are produced, which are recommended as dietary food for sick animals. When choosing a feed, check its class. Economy class products are made from low-quality raw materials. It is filled with empty calories and is fraught with health problems. The good feed starts with premium.

When buying, people often start off from the price tag and mistakenly believe that the best food is holistic. It attracts a high protein content, but its excess is fraught with complications. If the cat has problems with the urinary system, then it needs a low protein diet. Check with your veterinarian if holistic food can be given to your pet.

How to feed a Siamese cat

If you have enough free time to cook, you can try natural feeding. It includes:

  • lean meat (turkey, rabbit, beef);
  • offal (liver, scar, heart);
  • low-fat dairy products (cottage cheese, yogurt);
  • a small number of vegetables (carrots, cucumbers) and sprouted herbs;
  • cereals (rice, yachka).

Meat and offal should be 2/3 of the total diet. Twice a week they can be replaced with sea fish, but only after veterinarian approval.

The easiest way is with newborn kittens. Up to 2 months, the mother feeds them with breast milk. With age, animals develop lactose intolerance, so milk is removed from the diet. With a shortage of breast milk or a large number of kittens, newborns are transferred to artificial mixtures. Up to 1 month, babies are fed every 2 hours.

From 2-3 months, the first complementary foods are introduced to kittens. It can include minced beef and homemade cottage cheese, which is necessary for the development of bones. At this age, little Siamese is fed 6 times a day. From 4 months, the number of feedings is reduced to 4-5, and from 6 months – to 3. Before 1 year, meals are reduced to 2 times a day, and the portions are increased.

Care and maintenance

The cost of caring for and keeping a Siamese cat is lower than that of long-haired breeds. The breed is characterized by poor molt, therefore, 1-2 combing per week is sufficient throughout the year. Dead hairs can be removed with a special wool cleaning mitt. Frequent washing breaks the fat barrier and provokes the development of dermatological diseases. The pet can only be washed after a dusty repair or walk-in rainy weather.

Siamese cat care

Due to the lack of an undercoat, it is not recommended to walk the animal in cold weather. If your cat wants to go outside, try to distract her with toys. For comfortable maintenance, she will need a multi-level scratching post house. A large number of obstacles keep the animal active and distract from loneliness during the absence of the owners. Thanks to their advanced intelligence, Siamese women love interactive toys. You can buy them in the store or make your own.

Be sure to keep an eye on your ears, eyes, and teeth as well as your coat. Discharge from the eyes must be cleaned daily, earwax – weekly, and for oral care, it is enough to use toothpaste once a month. If you find sticky eyelids, dark spots inside the ear, plaque, or foul odor from the mouth, contact your veterinarian.

Tips for choosing a kitten

If you are looking for a future pet on the Internet, then pay attention to the photo. Newborn kittens of color-point color are a reason to think. Either the author is a master of Photoshop and wants to show the future color in the pictures, or he is trying to pass off a mestizo for a thoroughbred kitten. The coat of Siamese cats begins to darken no earlier than 2 weeks after birth. The final color appears by six months.

How to choose a Siamese kitten

The safest option is large nurseries. Their activities are licensed, therefore, when selling, they are required to provide all the necessary documents. The price in such institutions is higher than that of private sellers, but the likelihood of fraud is minimal. Before meeting Siamese kittens, evaluate the cleanliness of the room and the condition of the mother.

When choosing a kitten, consider its behavior. He must be active and curious. If the animal is handed over and looks completely healthy, then feel free to draw up a contract.

How much is a Siamese cat

In the final price of a Siamese cat, the prestige of the pedigree, the presence of vaccinations, the fame of the cattery, and the class awarded to the kitten are invested. The average cost of pet-class animals is 20 thousand rubles, for the breed-class – 30 thousand rubles, and for the show-class – 50 thousand rubles.

How much is a Siamese cat

If you do not have such an amount, but really want a Siamese cat, then try contacting a shelter. In addition to the yard animals, there are “lost” and pedigree pets with disabilities. They can be purchased completely free of charge. Despite the difficult fate, they quickly become attached to a person and become full members of the family.

HOW TO DETERMINE THE GENDER OF A KITTEN OR CAT: 10 RELIABLE WAYS

How to determine the gender of a kitten or cat: 10 reliable ways

Kitten gender

Finding out what gender a kitten is, a boy or a girl is necessary in a number of cases. This knowledge will come in handy when choosing a nickname or for putting up a pedigree pet for sale. The simplest thing is to go to the veterinarian, but there is not always the time or opportunity to do this. Then reliable and proven methods will come to the rescue.

Why you need to know the gender of a newborn kitten

Not only the features of the pet’s appearance depend on gender, but also its character. Before you start a mustache, it is better to decide in advance whether you need a boy or a girl. Each of them is associated with some peculiarities of living. For example, non-castrated males mark territory, spreading an unpleasant smell everywhere. Females periodically have estrus accompanied by changes in behavior.

It is all the more important to find out exactly whether the baby belongs to a particular breed. This is required in order to register the elite representative with the elite representative before the sale. In some breeds, males are more expensive than females. For example, you will have to pay more for a Maine Coon cat than for a cat.

Why you need to know the gender of a newborn kitten

At what age can you find out the sex of a pet

You can try to find out the sex of a kitten at two weeks of age. At this time, the baby has not yet acquired a full-fledged coat, so it is not very difficult to examine his genitals. After a few weeks, the seals’ genitals will be more pubescent, and it will be difficult to see them.

Inexperienced cat owners will almost certainly be able to find out the sex of the animal after 5-6 months. Then puberty occurs in adolescents and character traits are formed that correspond to females or males.

At what age can you find out the sex of a kitten

Precautions for inspection

It is always necessary to treat newborns with tenderness, and even more so to be careful when examining them. If the baby is still connected with the mother and is in her nest, then before determining the sex of the kitten and taking him in your arms, you need to calm him down. For this, the baby is taken in the palm of your hand and warmed. So he quickly calms down and stops spinning.

Then the following procedure is performed:

The baby is laid on a towel on his stomach or back.

  1.   Gently raise the tail and carefully examine the organs under it.
  2.   After the procedure, the baby is returned to its original place.

You shouldn’t often pick up the newborn from your mother. Regular weaning from a parent can lead to dangerous hypothermia of an immature organism. You cannot hold the baby by force or press on the stomach. The examination should not be performed immediately after feeding.

How else can you find out the sex of a kitten without harming him – scratch the back area next to the tail a little. Massaging the croup will lead to an instinctive raising of the tail. This trick will allow you to recognize the gender of the baby without removing it from the parent’s nest.

How to properly examine a kitten to find out its gender

All methods of sex determination in babies

There are different methods of how to determine the sex of a newborn kitten. The examination is carried out no earlier than one to two weeks of the baby’s life. There are several differences that are noticeable from birth. Having correctly identified them, it will not be difficult for the owner of a fluffy family to find out the sex of the kitten.

By the distance between the genitals and the anus

It is recommended to use this method immediately after the babies are born. At this time, the fur of newborns is wet, and it is easier to see the excretory channels located under the tail.

In this case, the distance between the holes, which are the exit from the rectum and the exit of the urinary organ, is determined. So, the gap in the boy is approximately 1 cm. There the cat has a scrotum, which will eventually take shape as it should.

In a girl, the distance between the anus and the vagina is not more than 1-2 mm. Both anatomical holes are in close proximity to each other.

How to determine the sex of a kitten by the distance between the genitals and the anus

By the shape of the genitals

The most common way is to determine the sex of a kitten by the external genitals. At an early age, the genitals are not so well-formed, and even an experienced owner of pussies is not always able to do this.

Differences are observed in the appearance of the holes. They are oblong in shape in females, and round in males. Simply put, a cat has a colon under its tail, while cats have an inverted exclamation mark (dot and dash).

By the presence or absence of testicles (probing)

The testicles, which are part of the reproductive system, are probed in the cat. They are located between the anus and the penis and only form by the end of three months of life. Feeling the organs helps to find out the sex of the baby before giving it to new owners. How to do it:

  1.   Place the baby in the palm of your hand, belly up.
  2.   Gently place your finger on your tummy and gently slide towards the groin area towards the anus.

If the testicles are felt under the finger, then this is a male. The female will have nothing in this area. The procedure must be carried out carefully, without pressing on the abdomen, reproductive organs, or the pet’s chest. This will not only cause discomfort but can also lead to injury.

Determining the sex of a kitten by the presence or absence of testicles

By color

The color of the pet becomes a clue on how to determine the sex of the kitten. Scientists have found that the combination of three types of colors indicates that we have a girl in front of us. This indicates the genetic condition of the tortoiseshell color. So, only the X chromosome has a black and red tint. Females always have such chromosomes in pairs.

However, there are exceptions when the male also has three shades on his coat. This is due to genetic disorders, which is why tricolor cats are mostly infertile.

Another characteristic feature is the presence of red color. Boys are most often redhead. However, nature has decreed that red-haired girls also meet on the way of lovers of mustachioed animals. This is due to the presence of a chromosome unusual for a cat, which is responsible for coat color. Often such females are not capable of conceiving and giving birth to offspring.

How to determine the sex of a kitten by color

DNA blood test

DNA testing is able to accurately find out the sex of the baby. The veterinarian will tell you how to tell which sex a kitten has used this procedure. The test is done in a specialized laboratory at the clinic. DNA analysis will give an accurate result from the very first days of a newborn’s life.

The main disadvantage of testing is the high cost. In addition, not every city has clinics with all the necessary equipment for testing. Basically, the DNA test is done by the owners of rare pedigree animals, when the demand for kittens is born at the time of mating of their parents.

How to tell a cat from a cat in adolescence or adulthood: implicit signs

In adolescents or adults, it is easier to find distinctive features, because their external signs are fully formed. It will not be possible to find out the gender by implicit signs with one hundred percent reliability. But they will help to confirm the guess.

How to tell a cat from a cat in adolescence or adulthood

Size and weight

From the age of six months, girls and boys begin to differ from each other in body shape and size. So, cats become smaller than cats, their body remains more fragile and graceful. In adolescent boys, the body becomes more massive, muscle mass develops better.

In addition, girls have rounded hips and tummy with a more pronounced step crease. In boys, the pelvis is narrow, the abdomen is tucked up, and the shoulder blades are more muscular.

Girls are lighter than boys. But here we must not forget about the breed of the pet. You can not compare the representative of the Maine Coon and the British. Comparisons are made only within the same cat family and breed.

Muzzle

How to determine the sex of a cat by the shape of the face? If you look closely at the pet, you will notice that the female’s muzzle is narrow and slightly elongated. Unlike the large skull of the male, her head looks graceful.

The features of the face also speak of gender. The male’s nose is wider, with a large lobe. The female has an elusive, but noticeable outward gracefulness of all features.

How to distinguish a cat from a cat by the face

Habits

Experienced owners know how to determine the sex of a cat simply by observing its behavior. The grown male begins to conquer his territory, leaving marks everywhere. This occurs at the age of 6-7 months. Females begin their first estrus at about the same time. She caresses, arching her back and lifting the back of the body up.

Cats love to relax, so they sleep most of the time. Cats, on the contrary, try to be in the center of events taking place in the house. Girls are cleaner, but boys are calmer about cleanliness and will not be licked all the time.

Often cats are ardent foodists, that is, adherents of dense and frequent meals. Cats are not so fond of eating and begging, although there are exceptions.

How to distinguish a cat from a cat by habits

Vote

There is a way to tell if it is a cat or a cat by the way they meow. Experienced owners say that the voice characteristics of different representatives differ in tone.

So, males have a lower voice. Females, on the other hand, are the owners of a high tone – but only if they do not call the cat during estrus. Then any tomcat will envy their bass rolls.

Can you trust folk methods?

In addition to the listed methods, there are also folk signs that our ancestors used. They cannot be considered completely reliable and are best used as additional to the main methods of how to distinguish a boy’s kitten from a girl’s.

Traditional methods of determining the sex of a kitten

The most famous folk methods:

  1.   By sight. It is believed that females look at everything meekly and modestly, but males – sternly and arrogantly.
  2.   On the coat around the reproductive organs. According to observations, the fur of the cat in this area is longer and thicker.
  3.   By tail position. It has been noticed that boys run to the bowl of food with their tails up, and girls – with their tails down.

These methods have been tested by many generations, but it is not worth using them to accurately determine the belonging. Not all pets are the same. For example, there are cats with an arrogant and even arrogant look or modest cats who approach the plate carefully, with their tail down.

You can find out the sex of a fluffy by the characteristics of the organs of the reproductive system. Different methods will tell you how to tell the sex of kittens by their appearance, the shape of their faces, and even their behavior. Traditional methods will help to confirm the owner’s guess. In case of difficulty, it is better to contact a veterinary clinic for advice.

Key facts

The Siberian cat is an animal with a magnificent appearance and a luxurious thick coat, which has long been popular not only in the country of origin – Russia – but also far beyond its borders. The description of the Siberian cat breed suggests a second name – the Siberian forest cat.

Key facts about the Siberian cat

These pets combine completely opposite qualities: massiveness and grace, tenderness and love of freedom, playfulness, and a desire to be alone.

Endowed with tremendous energy and good health, cats of this breed are prone to longevity. The lifespan of a Siberian cat is about 15-17 years. They range in size from medium to very large. For example, females usually weigh 4-8 kg, while males weigh 6-12 kg.

Dexterous and brave Siberians get along well in families with children or other pets. They will be good companions for the elderly, as they are quite independent, tactful, and not annoying. Reviews of the owners of Siberian cats indicate their cleanliness and accuracy.

The history of the origin of the Siberian cat

The image of a large cat-hunter from Russian folk tales perfectly fits the description of a Siberian cat. It is not known at what time these majestic animals appeared, but one gets the impression that they have always been on the territory of our country.

The history of the origin of the Siberian cat

For a long time, all cats with long hair were called Siberian, without even thinking where this name came from. Only in the 80s of the last century did breeders think about the progenitors of this popular cat.

Disputes began about the origin of the breed. One of the theories claims the Scandinavian roots of the Siberians. It is assumed that Norwegian forest cats took part in the birth of our giants. They could appear in Siberia together with settlers during the development of new territories at the beginning of the 16th century.

Indeed, in those days there are written references to strong shaggy cats, common in different regions of Russia. They were called then Bukhara cats. It is said that they were brought from Asian countries by Russian merchants. Supporters of this version suggest further mixing of the Bukhara breed with local wild Siberian Pallas’ cats.

Some felinologists do not deny the participation of Persian cats in the development of Siberians. Persian individuals could have entered our area along with travelers along the famous Silk Road.

The origin of the Siberian cat

There are scientists who do not recognize the independence of the Siberian cat breed. They simply call them large cats with thick, off-white coats.

An interesting fact is that during the blockade of Leningrad during the Great Patriotic War, almost all cats were destroyed. By the end of the blockade in 1943, the city was flooded with rats, carrying infections and spoiling food. After the breakthrough, trains of cats were sent from different cities of the Soviet Union to the undefeated city. They arrived, including from Siberian Omsk and Tyumen, as well as from Irkutsk.

Conscious development and improvement of the breed began in 1986 in nurseries in Moscow and Leningrad. The largest and most fluffy animals were taken as a basis. Nobody went to Siberia for them – they took local strong cats.

At the end of the last century, the situation changed: cats from the territory of Siberia and the Far East were attracted to the selection, which differed from their relatives by a powerful bone, massive head, and hard hair. Thanks to this work, it was possible to breed a truly Russian breed of true Siberian healthy men.

The history of the appearance of the Siberian cat

In 1991, the standards of the Siberian breed, developed by the felinologist Olga Mironova, were recognized by the World Cat Federation. Three years later, these characteristics were recognized by all international organizations.

Currently, in our country, there are many well-known Siberian cat breeding catteries. Most of them are located in Moscow and St. Petersburg, but these magnificent animals are also bred in Saratov, Krasnoyarsk, Kirov, Kursk, Yekaterinburg. The work on fixing various colors does not stop. So, one of the last colors of the cat was “Neva Masquerade”.

What does a Siberian cat look like

What does a Siberian cat look like in the photo and in real life? Photography will never convey the luxury of a thick fur coat, which becomes simply impenetrable by the cold season.

What does a Siberian cat look like

Muzzle

The shape of the animal’s head has a trapezoidal shape with smooth outlines of the muzzle. The transition from the frontal part to the nose is not clearly pronounced. The chin is well defined, the cheekbones are well developed and have a low rise. The cat’s cheeks are firm.

The ears of the animal are wide, tapering at the tips at the base. However, they are slightly tilted forward. From the inside, the auricles are covered with long hair.

The eyes of the Siberian are set wide and squint slightly. They are oval in shape and medium in size. The irises are completely colored. They can be green or yellow, but shades are also acceptable.

Body type

Siberian cats themselves have impressive size, and thanks to their luxurious coat they look like a lord. Powerful, proportionally folded torso goes well with a cute, delicate muzzle and a cute frill.

The massive body has an elongated shape with a powerful back and short neck. The rib cage is wide, rather voluminous.

The fore and hind legs of the pet are very muscular, with strong bones. They stand straight and parallel to each other. The legs are round and large. Tufts of long hair are clearly visible between the toes.

The tail of the Siberian is thick, of medium length. Wide at the base, it gradually tapers. At the very end, a thin, rounded tip is formed. The tail is covered with long hair along its entire length.

Wool and color

The luxurious wool of Siberians has a waterproof structure. The coat of cats consists of two layers: thick coarse long guard hairs and a dense undercoat of almost the same length. Despite this type of wool, representatives of the Siberian breed do not cause allergies.

Among the variety of colors of the Siberian cat, most often prevail:

  • white or cream shades with pink nose and paw pads;
  • black, which can be marble with spots on the sides or brindle with gray, brown stripes;
  • blue, in which the hair is gray with a blue tint, the paw pads and nose are also gray;
  • red with rich shades from red to brick with the same color paws and nose;
  • tortie – black with reddish spots;
  • silver and gold, these colors are also called smoky or chinchilla because of the incomplete color of the guard coat;
  • bicolor – two-tone color, in which white predominates;
  • tricolor, when the belly, muzzle and chest are white, and the rest is in black, blue or cream spots;
  • color-point, or Neva Masquerade, in which, against a white background, with age, dark areas appear on the legs, muzzle and tail.

Lilac, chocolate or Abyssinian colors are unacceptable for the Siberian breed. These shades should not appear even in pet points. The varieties of the Siberian cat appear only in colors: for example, the same Neva Masquerade does not stand out as a separate breed.

The nature of the Siberian cat

Despite their impressive size, Siberian cats are very active animals. They will be happy to play with a candy wrapper or a ball. At the same time, they have a strong sense of their own dignity. Cats are not talkative at all, so they will not interfere with constant meowing. The wayward character of the Siberian cat is manifested in a frequent change of mood, resentment towards a person. So, if the Siberian does not respond to the caress of family members, then it is better to leave him alone.

The nature of the Siberian cat

Pets are characterized by the tact of aristocrats. He will never impose on the owner, ask for attention from him if he feels busy or in a bad mood. However, in the family where the Siberian cat lives, laughter is often heard. It is caused by funny poses that the pet takes during sleep or when basking on the back.

Giants get along well with other pets. They do not try to become leaders, but prefer to maintain friendships with other cats or dogs. But birds or rodents must be kept at some distance from them. We must not forget that mustachioed are excellent hunters, so there will be no problems with mice in the house.

Cats are equally good-natured to all family members, including children. However, there is only one beloved master, to whom they are loyal. They are wary of strangers, preferring not to be seen.

Siberian cat habits

Siberians can live both in city apartments and in country houses. But private land ownership is preferable for them, because cats need to spend their irrepressible energy. In urban conditions, it is advisable to walk your pet at least twice a week using a harness.

Raising a Siberian cat

Siberians are very smart creatures, therefore, by showing some perseverance, you can achieve good training results. You should start by training the kitten to the litter box. At the first manifestations of anxiety, it is necessary to plant him there. They do this persistently until they achieve a positive result.

For a pet who spends little time outdoors, it is important to learn how to use a scratching post. Buying such a device will help solve the problem with scratched pieces of furniture. The feeding schedule, which the owner adheres to, will teach the cat not to beg or steal from the owner’s table.

Raising a Siberian cat

A representative of this breed should be walked on a special leash-harness, which should be gradually taught to it while still in the apartment. If you plan to travel frequently with your pet, then getting used to the car also needs to be developed a little, starting with overcoming short distances.

Reviews of the owners of Siberian cats speak of their canine character traits. Indeed, cats are able to show devotion to the owner, easily understand the intonation of the voice, the mood of a loved one.

When raising a Siberian giant, it should be remembered that they acquire the size of an adult by a year of life, but their psychological maturation ends only by three years.

Siberian cat health

Possible diseases

Long survival in a harsh climate and natural selection made the representatives of the Siberian breed practically invulnerable to most diseases. The health of the Siberian cat is excellent.

Siberian cat health

The main problem of the animal can be urolithiasis, as well as the ingress of licked wool into the intestine and its blockage. The presence of stones in the pet’s body can lead to kidney failure. Therefore, if the cat is anxious, he starts having difficulty urinating, you should contact your veterinarian.

Eating the vomiting herb helps to get rid of the hairballs in your pet’s intestines. But you can also help the animal with the help of castor oil. It must be poured into the cat’s mouth to induce a gag reflex. The kitten is given an incomplete teaspoon, an adult cat should drink a tablespoon of oil.

Poor and unbalanced nutrition, insufficient care, neglect of preventive vaccinations can lead to heart and vascular problems in elderly individuals. A kitten is first vaccinated at two months of age, followed by three months, and then once a year. Only proper care, a normal diet, regular prophylaxis against parasites and comprehensive vaccination will help your pet live a long and happy life.

Diseases of the Siberian cat

Reproductive health

The reproductive age in females of the Siberian breed begins by the year of life. Even then, the girl is ready for the birth of offspring, but do not rush. Too early pregnancy will become a great burden on the pet’s body, and its full development may be slowed down.

Adult childbirth usually goes without complications. On average, there are 5-6 babies in a litter. Siberian cats are very caring parents.

Sterilization or castration is carried out in animals under 1 year of age. This will help to avoid complications after surgery and facilitate a quick recovery.

Features of feeding and diet

Due to their good health, Siberian cats do not need any special nutrition. However, it must be balanced and contain all the necessary minerals for full development. Feeding with industrial dry or wet food, as well as natural food is allowed.

Features of feeding the Siberian cat

The number of feedings, the rate of servings should be appropriate for the age, energy consumption, and size of the animal. You can’t leave a cat hungry, but overfeeding can lead to the development of obesity, the consequences of which are dangerous for the health of the pet giant.

Kittens from 1 month old are fed 4-5 times a day, gradually reducing the number of feedings. From 6 months, adolescents are transferred to two meals a day, which they need for the rest of their lives.

Since the formation of the body of Siberians goes up to three years of age, protein food should prevail in their menu. Meat products are served raw or cooked. The meat should be low-fat varieties, and sea fish is offered to the animal in the form of pitted fillets.

At least once a week, adults are given low-fat fermented milk products and eggs. Adding vegetables to your diet will enrich your food with healthy fiber, which is essential for the proper functioning of the gastrointestinal tract.

How to feed a Siberian cat

You cannot treat your pet with tasty pieces from the master’s table. Our food contains preservatives as well as flavor enhancers that cause food allergies.

There are foods that are considered harmful to cats:

  • flour products;
  • sweets;
  • River fish;
  • pork;
  • tubular bones;
  • salty or spicy foods.

Dry food for Siberian cats must be of high quality. The only premium feed contains the vitamins and minerals they need. However, veterinarians are not advised to completely switch to dry food. It is best combined with wet canned foods or organic foods. The main thing is to do this in more than one feeding.

Care and maintenance

Siberian pets are considered very clean. They are characterized by accuracy and quick addiction to the toilet. These cats learn to use the toilet instead of the litter box before other breeds. The care and maintenance of a Siberian cat is not troublesome.

The pet’s coat is long but quite tough. Due to the structure, tangles do not form on it. Like all long-haired cats, Siberians are subject to seasonal molting, which occurs in autumn and spring. During these periods, they need to be combed more often: at least two to three times a week. In its normal state, the cat’s coat needs regular weekly brushing.

Siberian cat care

It is most convenient to carry out the procedure with a special comb for long hair, which can be purchased at the pet store. It removes dead hair and stimulates blood circulation. Cats need to be taught to comb from a young age gradually, stroking and encouraging for patience. The adult animal should respond favorably to the call for this necessary procedure.

Frequent washing of your pet, even with the use of special shampoos, is undesirable, because it will take care of its cleanliness on its own. However, after trips to nature or before participating in exhibitions and competitions, it is better to bathe the cat. Despite the fact that the ancestors of Siberians themselves caught fish from the water, their descendants do not like the process of interacting with water.

Washing the giant is best done together. First of all, you need to close the ears of the animal with cotton wool, fill a basin with a non-slip bottom with warm water. After the water procedure, wrap the cat in a warm towel and dry it in a warm room, away from drafts.

Do not forget to clean your pet’s eyes and ears weekly, using special lotions or warm boiled water for this. When wiping your ears with a cotton swab, you should not penetrate deeply: it is enough to remove the accumulated dust from the outer edge of the auricle.

Cutting the claws of a pet will be replaced by using a scratching post in a city apartment or walking through trees for suburban residents.

Tips for choosing a kitten

When choosing a kitten of the Siberian breed, one must remember its various colors. Some sellers try to pass off animals of unknown origin for purebred kittens. Therefore, the pet must be purchased from trusted breeders or in specialized nurseries.

It is better to buy Siberian kittens no less than three months old. By this age, the cat should already be accustomed to self-feeding and basic hygiene rules.

Watch your future pet. He should be moderately well-fed, with a mischievous character, very active. The eyes and ears of the pet should be clean, and the coat should shine and shine. The color of the kitten may not be immediately determined, because the shades of some appear only by the year of life. Ask the seller to show the parents of the baby, study the documents about their pedigree. A kitten by the age of three months has its own veterinary passport, which contains data on routine vaccinations.

How much is a Siberian cat

The price of a Siberian cat is determined by its purpose, that is, by its class. Thus, a family friend without vaccination documents or pedigree can be purchased for 2,000 – 3,000 rubles. Pets intended for participation in shows and exhibitions, as well as future breeding breeders, will cost from 7,000 to 35,000 rubles. Here the price will be influenced by the rarity of the color of the Siberian cat and the popularity of the cattery.

Key facts

Maine Coon is one of the most unusual and mesmerizing cat breeds in the modern world. They can be called a lazy breed, although they are not averse to getting involved in some kind of action game with other family members.

The description of the Maine Coon breed says that it originated in the United States in the 19th century. These representatives of pets occupy the first place in size among other cat breeds.

Key facts about the Maine Coon

This breed is unpretentious to care for, despite its rather long and fluffy coat. They do not have to be taken to grooming, ordinary combing at home will do.

The characteristic of Maine Coon is as follows: they are one of the most affectionate, kind, and attached. Coons treat children and other pets well, easily make contact, and are not afraid of guests. It is worth noting the high intelligence of cats, thanks to which they are easy to train.

Due to their thick and fluffy coat, which repels water, Maine Coons are able to tolerate frost. This is also facilitated by the presence of pads, which have spring functions and help to easily move through the snowdrifts. But at the same time, they can easily withstand very high temperatures, so there is no need to cut a coon for the summer.

Having become interested in something, these representatives of felines take a rather funny and funny pose: they stand on their hind legs and, with surprise on their muzzle, consider the object of attracting their attention.

Maine Coon’s health and life expectancy are high, giant cats can live 14-15 years.

Maine Coon origin story

The breed was developed in America two centuries ago. There is a very interesting and entertaining legend associated with the name of the breed. With the first part of the phrase, everything is extremely simple: Maine is the name of the state of breeding of the breed (Maine). Thanks to the long and fluffy tail, a legend has appeared that the ancestors of cats were crossed with a raccoon. Hence the second part of the word – kun (abbreviated from English racoon – raccoon).

Maine Coon origin story

How did Maine Coon cats appear in America? Historians believe that representatives of the shorthaired breed were first brought to America. And a little later, along with representatives from the New World, long-haired tetrapods were also brought. After that, the crossing of the two species began, as a result of which the modern breed appeared.

In 1861, a Maine Coon cat named Captain Jenks of the Sea Cavalry made a huge impression on the audience at an exhibition in Boston and New York. It was then that the first wave of popularity of this breed passed. Unfortunately, in the twentieth century, this place was taken by the Siamese and Persians, but not for long. After the end of World War II, they regained their positions, and it was then that the first Maine Coon association was opened – the Maine Coon Breeders and Fanciers Association (MCBFA).

What does Maine Coon look like?

Initially, Maine Coons were brought to the very harsh climate of Maine, which influenced their appearance. To survive in such conditions, they have a dense, thick, and long coat to protect them from frost, and on their paws – special pads for moving through the snowdrifts. Large sizes are due to the need for hunting. Now, even in the photo, the Maine Coon looks cute, and it’s hard to say that he was once a tough hunter.

What does Maine Coon look like?

Muzzle

The head has an elongated shape and massive size. This was required for the ancestors to “dive” into holes in order to catch rodents.

The color of the eyes always depends on the color of the coat: it can be blue, greenish, and even yellowish. The shape of the eyes is rounded, slightly slanting.

Ears have a dense structure of cartilage, abundant hair, and “lynx brush”. Thanks to these differences, cats could easily hunt rodents and small game. For this, American farmers fell in love with them. Also, to protect themselves from the cold, cats use an interesting way that is unique to them. They close the auricles very tightly so that cold air and wind do not get there.

Body type

The neck is elongated, of medium length, large, and very muscular (especially in males). There is a so-called “collar”, which is very much appreciated by breeders. The fuller the collar, the more expensive a kitten can be.

What does Maine Coon look like in proportions? The long body with a good coat is somewhat reminiscent of a rectangle. The muscles are well developed, and there is also a strong skeleton. The limbs are large and massive, have an abundant coat.

The tail is long and fluffy. It is equal in size to the length of the body. Some members may have raccoon stripes. In the past, the Maine Coon tail served as heaters in extreme situations. Because of its length, cats could easily wrap it around their entire body and keep warm.

Wool and color

The coat is long, on average 10-13 cm, and is water-repellent. On the tummy, more space is occupied by fluffy wool, and on the back, there are only coarse hairs. The hairline grows from the head to the pants and serves to warm the body from cold weather.

Maine Coons are quite varied in color. It differs in several categories:

1. Drawing

2. Coat color

3. The presence or absence of stains.

Maine Coon hair color is black, white, and red. Sometimes the colors may “mix” a little. The pattern is tiger, marble, and spotted. The spots are not always present and can be located on different parts of the body. Most often they are located on the legs, face, neck, and ears. Varieties of Maine Coon in color suggest a wide range of variations, while the breed has not suffered from excessive interference from breeders.

Maine Coon character

In general, the Maine Coon breed can be compared to a dog. These cats are very loyal to their owner, kind, and very often follow him like a tail. They also have warm feelings for other family members, so this breed can be called one of the most friendly and companionable.

Many people mistakenly believe that the character of Maine Coon is evil and stern, looking at the face, but they do not even suspect that behind such an appearance there is simply an angelic disposition.

Maine Coon character

Maine Coons love to take funny poses and make unusual sounds, but they rarely meow. The temperament of males and females has rather strong differences:

  1. Cats are less affectionate than females. During the sexual hunt, Maine Coons can be a little aggressive, mark the territory, which becomes an unpleasant problem for the owners. The way out is castration.
  2. Cats are more affectionate, they like to be close to the owner. Often choose a place at the feet. During estrus, they do not show aggression and other unpleasant character traits.

Both females and males are neutral towards guests in the house, but they will not be particularly happy if someone else begins to pay great attention to them. Coons are very caring parents, so after the birth of their offspring, they never leave their kittens for a minute, constantly looking after them.

Although this breed is very attached to family members, they also love independence. Maine Coons choose their places on the hills in order to observe everyone in comfort. Cats are not particularly playful, but no one can be insured from torn wallpaper, broken pots, and gnawed wires, so it is better to teach them from childhood to scratching posts and monitor their behavior.

Maine Coon habits

Coons will treat children calmly. But do not forget that it will be unpleasant for the animal if they begin to tug at its tail or mustache. Therefore, children need to be told in advance that a new family member should be treated carefully, affectionately. If you have a newborn baby, and the cat has lived with you for a long time, then there is no need to worry. Maine Coons treat small children well, they will not show aggression or jealousy. And when the child grows up, the pet will not mind accepting him into his company.

These giant cats are not aggressors. They can easily get along with other cats and even dogs, because the hunting instinct in them has almost died out, and in the past, they hunted only for rodents and snakes.

Maine Coon upbringing

So, these cats are very docile and give in to education without too many problems. Of course, they do not have to be trained, but they should be taught to use the tray, scratching post, and correct behavior in the apartment. Maine Coons have an excellent memory that makes it easy to remember and learn something new.

Maine Coon upbringing

To keep your pet from getting bored, buy some toys for him and install “climbing frames”. Firstly, the animal will be in motion, which is incredibly beneficial for its health, and secondly, it will prevent damage to property. If you wish, you can teach the Maine Coon some simple commands, affection, praise and goodies will help you with this.

Maine Coon health

Possible diseases

This breed has very good immunity and does not have many diseases in comparison with others. However, these large cats also have some ailments.

1. Maine Coons have very sensitive digestion, which is why indigestion can often appear. But you can protect yourself and your pet from this if you choose high-quality food. If you feed your pet food “from the table”, then you should limit it in the use of fatty, spicy, and salty foods, and it is better to exclude such food altogether.

2. Kidney disease or urolithiasis. It is quite common.

3. Diseases of the joints. Most often, individuals who live in apartments and lead an inactive lifestyle are affected. Therefore, you should buy your pet some toys with which he can spend part of his day. This will reduce the risk of joint problems.

4. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Refers to genetic diseases. It is very difficult to identify the disease because outwardly it does not manifest itself in any way, so you need to take your pet to a veterinarian-cardiologist for preventive examinations.

Maine Coon health

Maine Coons may develop diseases common to other breeds. Any deviation from the norms of behavior may indicate the initial stage of the disease. In general, the health of the Maine Coon can be considered exemplary.

Reproductive health

Heat in girls-coons begins in the period from 6 to 9 months, but in the first heat, the animal is not knitted. It is necessary to wait until the age of 1 year, and for the first time find a more experienced male. Two inexperienced animals are usually not knitted.

Mating is prescribed for 3-5 days of estrus, but preparation should begin much earlier. The first thing to do is to find a cat through clubs or in private advertisements – the future father of kittens. Both animals are worm-driven 2-4 weeks before mating, and 1-2 days before the claws are cut so that the partners do not hurt each other.

The female is brought to the male’s territory and left for several days – this allows the animals to get used to each other and perform several acts.

Features of feeding and diet

Your pet’s diet should include all the ingredients:

  • proteins – essential components for the good functioning of all organs, for growth and well-being;
  • carbohydrates – a source of energy;
  • fats – a source of energy and a component for the formation of immunity;
  • vitamins and minerals.

The most important thing in purchased feed is the presence of the meat ingredient in the composition in the first place. It should not contain a lot of preservatives (it is better that they are absent altogether), so it is advisable to buy food from professional brands.

Maine Coon feeding features

As for homemade food, most of it should be meat products: chicken, turkey, beef. You can also include cereals, vegetables, low-fat dairy products, eggs in the diet. In pet stores, you can buy a special herb – sprouted crops.

When choosing a diet, you should take into account the size of cats, because they are very different from other breeds. If this is your first time doing this, consult your veterinarian or breeder.

Care and maintenance

You can comb Maine Coons at home as needed, there should be no problems with this. Particular attention should be paid to places on the back and sides – there the coat is thicker, and can form tangles. You should also arrange bath procedures every three to four weeks. Maine Coons are not afraid of water, so there shouldn’t be any special problems. Be sure to choose the right shampoo so it doesn’t harm your pet.

The ears of the cats should be pinkish inside. Pet stores sell special wipes for the hygiene of the ears and eyes. But you can clean them with a soft cloth or napkin.

Maine Coon care

To protect yourself from damaged wallpaper and scratches, as well as to help the cat with a point of claws, you need to do your pet “manicure” and “pedicure” once a week.

For Maine Coons, you should purchase a tray that has a larger area than the standard ones. It is also recommended to buy closed trays, as some representatives of this breed like to scatter the filler, burying “their affairs”.

The general rules for the care and maintenance of a Maine Coon are no different from the rules for caring for any long-haired cat. Clipping the claws, brushing the ears, eyes, teeth, and brushing regularly is all that a giant cat needs.

Tips for choosing a kitten

First of all, you should find out as much information as possible about nurseries and breed standards. This is especially important for those who are going to buy a show-class kitten and participate in exhibitions with him. All information can be found on TICA, WCF, CFA-teleological systems.

Of course, it is important to decide on the sex and class of the purchased animal, as well as decide which of the branches you choose. There are two of them: American and European. The first is distinguished by thick hair, wide and obliquely set eyes, and larger size than the second. Europeans, on the other hand, are relatively miniature, their hair is not so thick and long, but at the same time, the “lynx of the tassel” is more pronounced.

How to choose a Maine Coon kitten

After 12-15 weeks, you can purchase a kitten and take it to your home. If you buy an animal in a good cattery, then you will definitely be told about each kitten and litter. The animal will be vaccinated by age, stamped, and all pets from the litter will be toilet and scratching post accustomed.

If you see that the kitten is behaving inactively, lying all the time, looking lethargic, then this is a clear sign of an unhealthy animal.

Ask the breeder to introduce you to one of his parents. By the behavior of the mother or father, one can easily determine the temperament of the future pet. Also, an experienced breeder will definitely give you food and filler for the first time, to which the kitten has been accustomed from birth. It is possible that a favorite toy will ride with you, which will help the animal adapt more easily to new conditions. It is recommended to buy Maine Coon kittens in nurseries so that later you do not find any defects in the pet or raise a completely different breed instead of the Maine cat.

How much is Maine Coon

The average Maine Coon price fluctuates around 20,000-50,000 rubles, but this is not always the limit. It all depends on the class of the kitten and its gender. Breeding and show class animals (for breeding and exhibitions, respectively) will cost more. But the pet class will be cheaper (these are pets).

How much is Maine CoonIt is worth noting that males are more expensive than females. If an individual has a rare coat color, then the price will rise. The price may even depend on the level of the nursery. The cost is due to the expensive content. Therefore, you do not need to skimp and buy an animal in the poultry market or respond to incomprehensible ads. Healthy and vaccinated Maine Coon kittens will definitely please with their beauty, kindness, and affection!

CAT BREEDS

THE RAREST CAT BREEDS

The rarest cat breeds

Breeders in many countries strive to breed a unique breed of cats, crossing wild and domestic breeds. And, based on the desire of people to have something unique and in a single copy, rare breeds are quite expensive.

Cat breeds that are listed in the Red Book and recently bred breeds are called rare. It is known about natural rare breeds and breeds artificially bred by crossing, about rare wild cats and small breeds living with humans. There are cat breeds that have hardly evolved over the millennia. Unfortunately, the trend is that rare feral cats die out over time. They live in their natural environment: in the jungle and deserts. Outwardly, such animals resemble their domestic relatives. Most likely, over time, wild rare cats will not disappear at all, and rare breeds of domestic cats will spread and cease to be small in number.

Cats … such wayward, mysterious, and even slightly mystical creatures. It is no coincidence that they are preferred to have pets. Of course, felines require careful care, but in return, you can get a lot of affection, and most importantly, an absolutely equal position with all family members. After all, these pets will not tolerate humiliation, they only allow a person to love himself and take care of his feline persona.

Even in ancient manuscripts about the life of high-ranking people, you can find a mention of their beloved cats.

What does the concept of “rare breed” include? it is a mistake to think that these breeds have appeared recently (although, for the most part, this is so). Some cats of rare breeds have been carefully guarded by breeders for centuries and have come down to us from ancient times. Although, most often, unusual felines are still a product of selection, brought to perfection. Indeed, every person, including a genetic scientist, has his own idea of beauty. Someone likes fluffy purring couch potatoes, and someone wants to domesticate a wild cat, leaving the dexterous disposition and habits of a predator. This is how rare breed cats are bred.

It should be said right away that the average breeder is not able to breed such a breed, crossing, for example, a Thai cat and an Angora. This is considered a gross violation of the rules. Cats of rare breeds are bred for years – this is a rather complicated technology.

The rarest cat breeds are far from cheap pleasure (starting price is 20 thousand dollars). But there is an unusually large number of people who want to have such pets. There are even queues for some breeds.

So, let’s start listing rare cat breeds. We will tell you about the history of the breed, character traits, care, and predisposition to diseases.

Kao-mani

A cat with unusual eyes – Kao-mani. It differs from its relatives in that it has a different color of the cornea: green and blue. In English-speaking countries, these beauties are also called “diamond eye” – diamond eye. This breed is native to Thailand. Even in the texts of the XIV century, a description of these boiling white cats is mentioned, which, by the way, only royal persons had the right to have. Surprisingly, Tao Mani became known to the general public only in 2009. These curious, highly intelligent cats have a slender, muscular body covered with white, well-fitting hair that is fairly short.

Tao-mani has a very characteristic genotype, so not every pure white cat with multi-colored eyes will belong to this breed. By the way, the color of the eyes may be absent. Individuals with the same green iris color are quite common. They are bred in Thailand and a few US states.

These cats need the company of both humans and their own kind. Communication is very necessary for them. They are not shy of strangers, they are tolerant of children.

Tao-mani – boast excellent health. The “weakest” point is the ears. There are individuals that are deaf in one of the ears, although this is carefully monitored by breeders: they only cross cats that are healthy in both ears.

Singapore

A fan of minimalism will surely be charmed by the Singapura – a tiny cat, barely larger than a three-month-old kitten. Adult Singapura cats weigh no more than three kilograms, and some cats are almost twice lighter! But the modest size is not the only advantage of these babies: the Singaporean is graceful, dexterous and playful, good-natured and neat in everything. And huge shiny eyes, a neat cute muzzle, and wool, as if covered with diamond chips, will not allow guests to take their eyes off your favorite!

And although this is not the rarest cat breed, the sparkling fashionista costs a little less than a real diamond.

Ragamuffin

The ragamuffin! This is how the name of the breed is translated, the creators of which took ordinary street murk as a basis. By adding to them the blood of a calm, tame and harmless ragdoll (ragdoll), breeders have received a completely new breed of long-haired cats, lively, suitable for families with children and many pets.

Ragamuffins are rare and expensive cats, the breed is few in number and remains exclusive even in their homeland, in the USA. Moreover, the appearance of a cat does not differ much from street moors – this was the main idea. Beauties flaunt in lush fur coats of various colors, with specks and stripes. But the character is unique – playful, but good-natured (despite the impressive size), sociable, but not intrusive, active, but not noisy kitty for a fan of natural beauty.

La Perm

Do you like long hair, but want something really unusual? Then take a look, or rather touch the unique la-perm wool. At any exhibition, in any society, these cats are eye-catching: an extraordinary fur coat curls, as if a fashionista has just left a beauty salon!

The most beautiful and very rare breed of cats was born thanks to a chance and a successful natural mutation. The progenitor of the breed is the only cat with the most ordinary coat, all kittens of which were born with amazing hair, similar to that of a lamb. La Perm cats attract fans not only with their unusual appearance but also with their affectionate, livable character. By the way, a fantastic fur coat does not require any special care: the curls are curled by nature and do not straighten after bathing.

Turkish van

Another rare cat breed in the world is the Turkish Van. Its uniqueness is determined, first of all, my its love for the water. The Turkish Vans are excellent swimmers, they love to run in shallow waters or catch small fish in shallow waters. This is not the only distinguishing feature of the breed.

Turkish Vans are large, medium-length wool. In addition, she is completely devoid of an undercoat – this explains the breed’s love for the water. The characteristic color is pure white with red-chestnut spots at the base of the ears, the tail is of the same color. There are often cases when there is a bright spot on the shoulder.

The body of a cat is like a real swimmer: a muscular chest, powerful legs (moreover, the front ones are noticeably longer than the hind ones), and the tail is shaped like a brush. Determining the male and female is quite simple: males are an order of magnitude larger.

The Turkish Van is a breed that gets along well with people, they are brilliantly trained, very playful. There are no problems with walks either: it can be either a harness, to which Turkish Vans quickly get used to, or an aviary, or free walking with the owner.

Munchkin and Napoleon

Munchkins are very rare cat breeds. This is a kind of dachshund of the feline world. The legs of these cats are disproportionately short in relation to the body.

Their posture in a standing position is also interesting: they lean on the base of the tail and hold their front legs in front of them. In this position, which is more typical of a kangaroo, munchkins can be for a very long time.

The uniqueness of these unusual cats also lies in the fact that short legs are not the fruit of the labor of breeders, but a natural genetic mutation. Thus, the breed emerged from quite ordinary domestic cats, in the genotype of which a special dominant gene “short-legged” appeared. This explains the variety of shades, colors, and lengths of the coat.

Munchkins are not in good health, it is quite difficult for them to survive in their natural environment.

Napoleon is the name of rare cat breeds that appeared by crossing the Munchkin and Persian. A characteristic feature in addition to short legs is dwarfism. The maximum weight of the Napoleons is only two kilograms.

Serengeti

There are several hundred of them! Brought the Serengeti to the United States. The pioneer breeder wanted to present to the world such a breed that, repeating the external qualities of the African serval, would be absolutely tame and domestic. Years of searching were crowned with success: the result was a graceful, unusually beautiful cat.

Surprisingly, there is not a single wild serval gene in the Serengeti genotype. However, she is unusually similar in appearance to him. But the disposition is home, calm, friendly. Cats have a muscular body, long legs, and powerful legs. Coloring is allowed black or smoky with pronounced spots of a rounded shape (stretching horizontally is allowed) or black with barely noticeable spots. Another feature is the large wedge-shaped head that resembles the head of a wild feline. Moreover, this symptom manifests itself already at birth.

The Serengeti is smart, graceful, very stubborn natures. These cats will not tolerate the appearance in the house of someone more important than them. They are the center of everything. Another feature is the unsurpassed talkativeness and companionship.

The most common disease of the breed is urolithiasis.

Caracal

Very rare cat breeds include caracals. Yes, these are not cats at all, but real wild lynxes, only small in size (in comparison with other representatives of the species). In the wild, caracals live in the steppes and savannas (hence the name “steppe lynx”).

These cats also differ from the usual lynx in color: the coat is thick, rather short, the coloring is brick-colored (sometimes sandy), characteristic spots are found only on the muzzle.

Caracal in Turkish means “black ear” – it really is. His ears are crowned with charming black tassels. These cats are very fit, muscular, with very long legs.

At home, the life expectancy of a caracal reaches 18 years. However, having decided to start it, you must be aware that these are by no means domestic purring cats – wild predatory habits remain for life.

Toyger

Would you like to have a miniature pet tiger? Then Toyger is what you need.

Its literal translation from English is “toy tiger”. The only thing these kittens cost decently: from 10 thousand dollars.

What makes Toygers unique? With its colors, contrasting in everything. The most important thing is tiger black stripes, moreover, monochromatic, devoid of any color transitions. They stand out in contrast to the reddish-brown background. The tips of the paws and tail are always black. The body is toned, muscular. By the way, do not overfeed the Toyger – this is one of the owners’ mistakes. The front legs are crowned with thick, powerful pads.

Toygers are very companionable cats, they get along well with children. They lend themselves well to education and training. At the same time, Toygers are quite calm and agreeable, they will not require constant games, much more these rare breed cats like to sit in the owner’s arms.

American curl

This breed, bred in the USA in 1981 and distinguished by its special, curled back ears, has two varieties: semi-longhaired and shorthaired. Some cat associations recognize the two species as separate breeds. The American curl is quite famous in the United States but is rare in other countries.

Sokoke (soukok)

The last African emigrant (the last on the list, but not in beauty and uniqueness) is a charming Sokoke. This is a very rare breed of cats, whose ancestors lived in Kenya, in the Arabuko Sokoke Reserve. Small semi-wild cats attract Kenyans with a good-natured disposition, irrepressible curiosity, and beautiful hair, decorated with an intricate marble pattern. For an unusual fur coat, the aborigines nicknamed these cats “Hadzonzo”, which means “similar to the bark of a tree.” Sokoke is direct descendants of the Hazonzo, a breed formed by the domestication and taming of semi-wild cats in Kenya. They are tame, curious, funny, and active friends.

Bombay

The cat is extremely intelligent, easygoing, and sociable. At the same time, even kittens do not create too much noise, rarely do dirty tricks, and easily get used to ordering. The character, ideal for keeping in an apartment, the Bombes inherited from the Burmese – famous friends of dogs, small children, and even small domestic animals like mice and birds.

Elf Cat – a cat with crooked ears

The Elf Cat resembles a fantastic creature with crooked ears. Its body is practically naked or covered with imperceptible down, sparse hair is present only on the ears, some areas of the legs, on the muzzle and tail.

This breed is extremely rare, with a population of only ten inhabitants of America. The weight of this active and sociable animal varies from three to six kilograms, and the curvature of the ears can be from ninety to one hundred and eighty degrees.

European Burmese

The CFA distinguishes between the Burmese cat itself and its species bred in the UK, calling it the European Burmese cat.

Burmilla. The breed was bred in the UK in 1981 as a result of an unplanned mating of a Persian chinchilla and a lilac Burmese.

American wire haired cat

This breed appeared as a result of a spontaneous mutation of the American Shorthair cat in 1966. It soon became clear that the mutation is dominant and it is not difficult to breed such cats.

Another name for the American wire-haired breed is wire-haired for the appearance of the coat. The degree of effect of such wool is different. Wool hair can be held together, or bent. Therefore, if a cat of that breed is combed, the “spring” effect will disappear.

LaPerm

A curly-haired cat breed that appeared in the United States in the 1980s as a result of free crossbreeding. The breed received official recognition in 1996. LaPerm is one of the most expensive cat breeds.

Dragon Li

The CFA recognized this breed, descended from Chinese feral cats, just 6 years ago – in 2010. It is almost impossible to acquire cats of this breed outside of China.

In China itself, the breed is also not numerous. The popularity of this breed is not added by the fact that in appearance it practically does not differ from ordinary mongrel cats.

Usher

A very scandalous story is associated with the emergence of this breed, and its “creator” is still wanted by the police. The fact is that in 2007 specialized (and not only) publications began to dazzle with information that “the rarest cat breed in the world” was bred. These unusually intelligent and loyal soft-footed creatures are also completely hypoallergenic.

However, after a series of genetic examinations, it was found that Ashera is nothing more than a species of the savannah – a cat, also a rare breed, but known to the public. But before the truth was established, many people had already fallen for such an exotic bait, paying 20 thousand dollars for kittens.

Ashera is truly a giant of the feline world, because, according to the creators, the genotype of the serval, the Asian leopard, and domestic cats is embedded in it. Indeed, their height reaches one meter. There may be several colors, the rarest (on average, only four kittens are born a year) has golden-orange spots, the other is ashy and the most common is with black spots like a leopard.

Winner Ranking: Home Serval

So, we have sorted out the rarest cat breeds, their names are also given. However, there are three winners.

So, home serval. Sometimes it seems that this cat does not live with a person at all but only came from the forest to stay. In part, this is so, because no one bred the breed specifically for the house, it was just that people realized that servals are perfectly domesticated.

However, the habits remain wild. Servals are excellent hunters, they love to run, jump, catch up with prey. Breeders should consider this. It is unlikely that this breed will get along in an ordinary apartment – a mansion with high ceilings will be more to her taste because the jumps of the serval reach three meters up.

Savannah

The next rarest cat breed in the world is the Savannah. We have already touched on it when we talked about asher. Savannah was bred in the 80s of the last century. The creators wanted to give people a real domestic leopard. Then, they believed, wild cats would be left alone, they would not be kept in captivity – in mansions and apartments.

Savannahs originated from the crossing of the already known serval and the Siamese cat. As a result, from the first, they got the habits of a predator and spots, and from the second they got a rather docile disposition and irrepressible talkativeness.

Savannahs are perfectly trained, and they carry out commands that are quite difficult for felines: “fetch”, “bring” or “stranger”.

Chausie

At the top of the rating “Rare breeds of cats in Russia” (and throughout the world) is, in the opinion of many, Chausie. These cats boast a completely unique genotype and outstanding appearance.

Chausie is the fruit of a natural (initially) crossing of a wild jungle cat and a domestic cat. Only after a long time, connoisseurs of soft paws noticed how beautiful these kittens are.

It was decided to start breeding a new breed, a reed cat, but affectionate and domesticated. Only in 2003 was it possible to record a new breed. However, to this day, its elimination is not going smoothly, it is too difficult to combine the genes.

Three colors are fixed by the standard: black, silver or tabby. The last two are ticked, i.e. the color is uneven, interspersed with stripes. A prerequisite is a clear pattern on the head, also on the ears, and the tip of the tail.

Chausie is an excellent companion for their owners, but the predatory habits of the jungle cat remain: they swim and hunt in the water, make supplies when the owner does not see and jump well. These cats do not accept dry food, even exclusive ones – only meat should be in the diet. Chausie’s gastrointestinal tract simply does not digest grains and vegetables.
